Laundering and Care of Hemp Fabric

Hemp fibers actually become stronger when wet.

Hemp fabric is machine washable, in any temperature water, and machine or line dryable. Finer and embellished fabrics should be limited to 110 deg F and washed by hand. Please serge or stitch the edges of any hemp fabric you’re washing to prevent it from unravelling. Bleach can significantly degrade and weaken the fibers, so DO NOT use bleach on hemp fabrics.

Rinsing with vinegar helps to soften, disinfect, and brighten the fabric. Drying them in sunshine will help remove stains.

Hemp fabric will get softer with each washing and use, but some crispness can be expected to remain. To hasten the softening of the fabric, wash in hot water and tumble dry several times, using a fabric softener if you like. DO NOT use fabric softener if you are using your hemp for diapers or menstrual pads, they can hinder absorption and irritate the skin . In place of fabric softener or bleach, try adding a cup of vinegar to your rinse cycle.

You may iron your hemp fabric while damp and it will be wrinkle free and crisp as if you’d starched it.
